Misurina is ideally located to visit the delightful villages nearby: Auronzo di Cadore, Cortina d’Ampezzzo, Dobbiaco and San Candido make it one of the best places to visit in Dolomites.
At 864 meters a.s.l., Auronzo di Cadore is famous for its fine artificial lake, where major powerboating and canoeing competitions are staged. Walking and cycle paths wind their way out of the town, allowing people to take a healthy walk or ride and enjoy the fantastic views, such as Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
To see: the 18th century parish church of S. Giustina in Villagrande, the largest church in Cadore; S. Lucano church in Villapiccola, neo-classical in style, and 16th century S. Caterina church in Cella.
Cortina d’Ampezzo, the Queen of the Dolomites, is one of Italy’s best known tourist resorts. It is a breathtaking location for admiring the famous mountains surrounding it. After the 1956 Olympics, the first to be broadcast on TV, its fame increased in Italy and overseas, and it became a leading tourist attraction.
The Cortina-Dobbiaco marathon takes place in June, a race open to all.
In August, on the eve of Ferragosto (August bank holiday), “Bonfire Night” is staged, with the striking night-time torchlight procession to the Tofane, the lights forming a large “M”.
Also called Gateway to the Dolomites, Dobbiaco borders with the Dolomiti di Sesto and Fanes-Senes-Braiese Natural Parks. In the territory are two beautiful lakes: Lake Dobbiaco and Lake Landro.
Gustav Mahler, the famous Austrian composer, spent his summers here from 1908 to 1910. Music weeks are still held today in Dobbiaco in honour of his happy stay.
Other not-to-be-missed events are the Dolomiti Balloonfestival, International Choir Festival and Dolomiti Superbike.
San Candido in the Alta Pusteria region stands at an altitude of between 1,113 and 3,145 meters a.s.l. A must visit here is to the Romanesque church dedicated to S.Michele (see photo) and the Dolomythos Museum, wholly devoted to the Dolomites.
The International Snow Sculpture Festival is held in San Candido in January.
For all those wishing to enjoy themselves and relax there is Acquafun, a veritable oasis, with swimming pools, solarium and saunas another reason why this truly is one of the best places to visit in Dolomites
